Spyware Implications
As the name suggests, spyware spies on all the information and activities happening in your
system. It enters your machine bundled as adware or through some other modes such as links and inactive windows. The owner of spyware sells or
resells your illegally tracked data to a third party without your approval. You in fact get to know your system is spied when spyware has already
started affecting it. You may notice system hang ups, slow down, loads of pop-ups and spams. This write-up discusses some common impacts of
spyware on your PC which should help you gauge the gravity of damage it triggers.
Information hijack. Basically, spyware runs in background while you are working on your system and keeps detecting your activity level (key
strokes, surfing, and applications usage), your computer’s information (files, cookies) and your personal information present on your system
(email ids, passwords, credit card and debit card numbers). Your confiscated information is sold or resold to a third party, which may be a data
collection site, a search monitoring site, or an advertising centre or marketing company, etc. The data collection site may resell your
information to some relevant buyer, a search monitoring site may record your surfing activity to determine your information requirement and send
you promotional content accordingly while, an advertising center may use your details to assail you with numerous unwanted promotions as pop ups
and banners.
Security settings. Your tracked personal information may also be exploited to hack your system, or to misuse your credit or debit cards. This
is the gravest extreme and spyware with such purposes is called malware. Malware may interfere with your system’s settings such as changing your
browser’s default home page, installing toolbar automatically, disabling some program files which may impede your computer’s normal operation and
you may get error messages.
System speed. Spyware runs in the backchannel all the while you are working online and may consume your computer’s RAM and VM in the process.
As a result, your machine may slow down to a crawl.
Internet speed. Spyware tracks your computer’s information and transfers it to a third party which may use the spied data to send you
promotional content. This data transfer may engage a considerable portion of your internet’s bandwidth and consequently your internet speed may
decelerate.
Advertisements. Entry of a spyware may mean spammed inbox and computer screen may get bombarded with popups. This becomes very disturbing
especially when you are in the middle of some important work. The popups irritate by popping up here and there, disturb the work flow and waste
time as you will take some measure to control these, either anti-spyware scan or shutting down the system. Remember, the control measure must not
be closing the popup windows but should be restarting the system, and downloading popup blockers to prevent any further popup problems.
Uninstall. Usually you cannot uninstall spyware like you do otherwise with other software. You may not be able to remove spyware simply from
your system’s Control Panel-> Add/Remove Programs feature instead, you will need to use an anti-spyware to remove or quarantine spyware
present in your machine.
Spyware is a serious challenge for your computer’s security and integrity. You must therefore take immediate steps to curb the problem and
should incorporate safe surfing practices as precautionary measure,
